React app fast deploy on Aws Amplify

In this Article i’m not going to talk about React library and its power for building user interfaces, in the other hand AWS i will focuse on aws Amplify wich is a fully managed platform that helps you build, deploy, and host your web and mobile applications. In this article, we will go through the process of deploying a React app to AWS Amplify.

Before we begin, make sure you have the following prerequisites:

  • An AWS account
  • Node.js and npm installed on your machine
  • A React app created with create-react-app or a similar tool
  • The AWS Amplify CLI installed on your machine

Step 1: Initialize the Amplify project

First, navigate to the root directory of your React app and run the following command to initialize the Amplify project:

amplify init

This will ask you a few questions to configure your Amplify project. Follow the prompts to specify the project name, environment, and other details. Make sure to select “JavaScript” as the frontend framework.

Step 2: Connect the app to the Amplify Console

Next, we need to connect the app to the Amplify Console so that it can be deployed and hosted. Run the following command to do this:

amplify console

This will open the Amplify Console in your browser and prompt you to log in to your AWS account. Follow the prompts to complete the login process and connect your app to the Amplify Console.

Step 3: Add hosting to the Amplify project

Now that our app is connected to the Amplify Console, we need to add hosting to the Amplify project. Run the following command to do this:

amplify add hosting

This will ask you to select a deployment environment and specify the build settings for your app. Make sure to select “Production” as the environment and specify the build command and output directory for your app. For a create-react-app project, the build command is npm run-script build and the output directory is build.

Step 4: Deploy the app

With the hosting added to the Amplify project, we are now ready to deploy the app. Run the following command to do this:

amplify publish

This will build and deploy your app to the Amplify Console. Once the deployment is complete, you will see a message indicating the URL of your app. You can visit this URL to see your app live on the web.

Step 5: Customize the hosting settings

The Amplify Console provides a number of customization options for your app’s hosting settings. You can access these options by clicking on the “Hosting” tab in the Amplify Console.

Some of the options you can customize include:

  • Domain name: You can specify a custom domain name for your app by clicking on the “Custom domains” tab and following the prompts to add and verify your domain
  • SSL/TLS certificates: You can secure your app with an SSL/TLS certificate by clicking on the “SSL/TLS certificates” tab and following the prompts to request and validate a certificate.
  • Redirects and rewrites: You can configure redirects and rewrites for your app by clicking on the “Redirects and rewrites” tab and specifying the rules you want to apply.

Step 6: Monitor and update the app

Once your app is deployed, you can monitor its performance and make updates as needed. The Amplify Console provides a number of tools tools and features available for monitoring and updating a React app deployed on AWS Amplify. Here is a more detailed explanation of each of these:

  • Continuous deployment: With continuous deployment, any changes you make to your app’s codebase will be automatically deployed to the Amplify Console. This means that as soon as you push a change to your Git repository, the Amplify Console will pick up the change and start a new deployment. This makes it easy to keep your app up to date without having to manually trigger a new deployment every time you make a change.
  • Version control: The Amplify Console integrates with Git, allowing you to track changes to your codebase and roll back to previous versions if needed. This is useful if you make a change to your code that breaks your app, as you can easily revert to a previous version to fix the issue.
  • Testing: The Amplify Console includes a built-in testing tool that allows you to test your app on different devices and browsers. This helps ensure that your app is compatible with a wide range of platforms and can be accessed by users with different devices and browsers.
  • Custom build settings: You can customize the build settings for your app by modifying the amplify.yml file in the root directory of your project. This file defines the dependencies and build steps for your app, and you can update it to specify custom settings or add additional functionality.
  • Environment variables: Environment variables are used to store sensitive data, such as API keys or database credentials, in a secure manner. The Amplify Console allows you to manage your environment variables from the web interface, making it easy to update them as needed. This is useful if you need to change your API keys or update your database credentials, as you can do so without modifying your codebase.
